Gas Patio Heater Heat Radius: What Does the Manufacturer’s Claim Actually Mean?

For example, a gas patio heater might claim to offer 10 feet of heat radius. That’s easy to read, but the claim can be easily misunderstood. Heat radius is not a guarantee that every location within 10 feet of the heater will be equally comfortable. It’s an estimate of where customers can expect to feel some meaningful warmth on a calm, outdoor night.

Wind speed, outdoor temperature, patio coverings, heater height, and seating position all affect the real-life outcome. For instance, a heater can produce adequate warmth right next to the burner and hardly any useful warmth right at the edge of its advertised range. The easiest way to understand a heat radius claim is to view it as being generous, not guaranteed.

Heat Radius Is Not the Same as Coverage Area

Heat radius measures from the heater to the edge of its warmth zone. A heater with a 10-foot radius creates circular coverage that reaches about 20 feet across. That is very different from a heater that promises to warm up a square patio that is 10 feet by 10 feet.

To roughly figure out coverage area from radius, remember the area formula for circles: πr 2

. A radius of 10 feet means about 314 square feet of heated floor space. Remember that number does not mean customers will feel evenly warm in 314 square feet. It means they will feel warmest near the heater and least warm near the outer limits of its range.

Some retailers throw around “heat radius,” “heating range,” and “coverage area” as if they are interchangeable. They’re not. Radius is distance. Coverage area is the total space within that distance. Look carefully and make sure you know which one the product page is using before you compare two patio heaters.

Notice that a claimed radius of 12 feet only sounds slightly bigger than a radius of 10 feet. But the floor coverage area is much bigger. A radius of 12 feet creates about 452 square feet while a radius of 10 feet creates about 314 square feet. That is why small differences in claimed radius can make a large difference on paper.

What Companies Usually Assume with their Claims 

Most heater claims assume optimal or near-optimal conditions. Imagine a still evening with the heater on high, customers sitting nearby, and the patio with walls or screens breaking up some of the air flow. In those conditions, heat can travel farther and still feel useful.

But some customers may try to use them in a backyard with open sides, windy conditions, chill-inducing concrete floors, or cold and rainy weather. Patio heaters work by sending heat out into the open air. Outdoor air disperses that heat quickly. 

One big difference between outdoor heaters and indoor heaters is that a gas patio heater does not try to heat every square foot of your yard or garden. It produces radiant heat that aims toward people, furniture, and any surface within its heating range.

Radiant heat feels a lot like sunshine. You can feel radiant heat beating down on you while the air temperature stays cool. That’s why one person seated right under the heater canopy can feel comfortable. But another person just a few feet away may still feel chilly. The heater isn’t broken. 

The heat just naturally weakens with distance and air movement. Speaking of air movement … Wind will push heat away from your guests. One guide for outdoor heaters says avoid placing them in areas with regular winds above 10 mph. The heater could become unstable or the flame could go out.

BTUs Aren’t the Whole Story 

BTU stands for British thermal unit. It’s how heating industries measure how much heat a heater produces. Many propane patio heaters range between 40,000 and 48,000 BTUs. Larger BTU levels can help, but they aren’t the whole story.

Heater shape matters too. A tall mushroom-style heater concentrates heat down from a larger reflector at the top. A pyramid heater might blast heat out the front through a glass tube. Tabletop heaters give off less heat overall and work best when seating is close to the unit. Mounted heaters project heat in specific directions. 

That 48,000-BTU heater may feel weak if it’s in the middle of an open yard with strong wind blowing. But a lower BTU heater might keep your guests cozy if you use it on a covered patio with solid walls to the sides. Plus, remember that heat direction matters too. Customers might prefer heaters that focus most heat toward seating areas.

Researchers who have conducted real-world tests found some 48,000-BTU mushroom heaters produce their best heat at about seven feet or less when running at full heat. Even if the product claims a 12- to 15-foot radius. Remember, “heat radius” doesn’t mean comfort radius. 

Layout of your Patio or Deck Determines Range

If your patio includes fences, privacy screens, or other barriers against wind, you might notice a longer heat range. Patio covers like pergolas have open sides that may not block heat from drifting upward. An uncovered patio or deck has even less wind blockage.

Ceiling height matters, too. Tall patio heaters must be allowed space above them for safety. Don’t place a tall heater under a narrow umbrella, awning, tent, patio roof, or tree branch unless the product specifically allows for it. That safety clearance is separate from the heat radius claim.

Remember, the National Fire Protection Association recommends keeping anything combustible at least 3 feet away. And always obey safety rules that require you to keep outdoor heaters away from doors, patio openings, windows, and exits if you’re entertaining guests. Read your product manual because your heater might need even more clearance.

Your furniture layout can make a difference too. One large heater in the center of a rectangular dinner table may only warm customers near the middle. People sitting near the ends may feel cold. You might get better results by using two smaller heaters and placing them near seating areas instead.

Tips to Get Useful Heat Where You Need It

Think of a heater’s claimed radius as the absolute maximum range. If you want to estimate the actual comfort range, plan on something less than the advertised radius. If a heater claims a 10-foot heat radius, count on strong heat between five and seven feet away from the heater on a cool night or when wind blows.

First, identify where people will sit. Mark the spots where customers will seat themselves. Patios usually seat people on chairs, dining chairs, or lounge furniture. Plans shouldn’t center around open walkways or empty patio corners. On a large or long patio, position heaters along the seating line instead of just placing one heater at one end.

Plug the heater in before guests arrive. Concrete, metal furniture, and surrounding patio surfaces can feel chilly until they’ve had a chance to warm up. Once the area warms up a bit, see if guests are warm enough or if you need to move chairs or tables. Always have extra blankets handy for cool nights.

Take a few minutes to read product manuals before buying patio heaters or rearranging your patio. Check for the unit’s listed BTUs, preferred fuel type, tips about windy conditions, required overhead clearance, required side clearance, and intended placement area. A good heat radius estimate helps you compare models.

Case Study: A 120-Seat Patio Required More Than One Heater

It doesn’t happen often, but every once in a while we come across a real-world patio heating example that perfectly illustrates one of our points. The Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa in California knows exactly why patio heating is a coverage problem and not just a question of buying the heater with the largest advertised heat radius.

Fourteen insulated ceiling mounted infrared heaters and one wall mounted infrared heater bring warmth to diners outdoors at the Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa Twenty/20 Grill & Wine Bar. 

The resort’s Twenty/20 Grill & Wine Bar features a spacious outdoor patio with views of the Pacific coastline. In order to allow guests to comfortably dine outdoors even during cool nights and evenings the restaurant installed 15 gas infrared patio heaters to cover its 120- seat outdoor patio. That is an important detail. 

A 120-seat patio does not equal one giant party of people sitting around one heater. Instead, people are spread out across tables and chairs and some tables will be closer to a heater than others.

By using multiple heaters the restaurant was able to blanket its patio with radiant heat rather than relying on one or two high-output heaters placed far away from guests.

That’s why we don’t recommend basing your patio heater decision on a manufacturer’s advertised **heat radius alone. ** 

While we can’t say for certain that every 120-seat patio requires 15 heaters to keep everyone comfortable, we can say that the Sheraton’s approach to outdoor heating proves the importance of heat distribution and heater placement.

Think about that the next time you entertain on your patio or balcony. If one end of your outdoor room contains a dining table and the other end features a lounge area **two well-positioned heaters may offer more comfort than a single extremely powerful heater placed in between.

What does a 10-foot heat radius mean on a gas patio heater? 

A 10- foot heat radius doesn’t mean everyone within 10 feet of a patio heater will feel equally warm.

It’s a theoretical distance at which the manufacturer believes its heater can provide useful warmth under ideal conditions. Some people close to the heater may feel too warm while those closer to the edge of the radius could feel too cool.

How else can a patio heater’s advertised radius be misleading?

How do you calculate the coverage area of a 10-foot heat radius? 

  • Area = π × radius² 

  • Area = 3.14 × 10² 

  • Area = approximately 314 square feet 

So… would every square foot of that area receive the same level of heat?

That 314 square feet represents the area within that radius, not how comfortable every person will feel within that area.

Someone sitting next to the heater may feel too hot while someone sitting at the outer limits of the radius may feel cold.

If a patio heater has a heat radius of 12-feet is that much better than one with a heat radius of 10-feet?

In terms of coverage area, yes. Using the formula above we know that a 10-foot radius covers about 314 square feet while a 12-foot radius covers approximately 452 square feet.

That’s an increase of about 138 square feet which can make a huge difference on your patio.

Will wind affect that 452 square feet of heating area?

Absolutely. A heater’s effective range can be severely limited by wind. You may still enjoy radiant heat from a patio heater on a windy day, but unless that heater is properly sheltered the wind will cool you down faster and may affect the unit’s performance.

Does that mean the heat radius only applies to my covered patio?

No, but you need to take coverage claims with a grain of salt.

Every heater we’ve ever tested performs better when it isn’t exposed to wind. An uncovered patio in a very windy location won’t feel the same as a covered patio that is protected from the wind on multiple sides.

So a heater with a larger heat radius will always work better?

Not necessarily. Don’t forget about heater placement. Just because two heaters both have 10-foot radius labels doesn’t mean they will perform the same way on your patio. A poorly placed heater may have an advertised heat radius of 10-feet but won’t keep you nearly as warm as another heater with a smaller heat radius that has been properly installed.

Why does heater placement matter so much? 

If your heater is placed too far away from where people will actually sit then its claimed heat radius won’t matter.

Find the perfect location for your heater first, then use the heat radius numbers to make sure your heater can deliver adequate heat where you need it.

Will a higher BTU gas patio heater have a longer heat radius?

Not necessarily. While higher BTU heaters produce more heat that doesn’t always translate to a longer heating distance.

Just like placement many other factors can influence how far a heater’s heat can effectively reach including; reflector size, mounting height, overall heater design, heating efficiency, wind, and heater direction.

How far away from a gas patio heater should people sit?

Every heater is different, that’s why there is no specific distance we recommend for sitting away from a patio heater.

Heaters themselves vary so much that using a generic number like “5 feet” or “10 feet” could lead to you incorrectly positioning your patio heater.

As a general rule you will feel more heat when you sit closer to a heater. The further away you get from your heater the less heat you will feel.

Can I use my gas patio heater under cover?

Only if your patio heater is specifically designed to be used under cover.

Just because your patio is covered that doesn’t necessarily make it safe to place a gas patio heater underneath. Some heaters are specifically designed to be used under cover and will have clear instructions that allow for their use under a patio cover.

Covered areas can make your heater more effective by eliminating wind but they can also create serious safety concerns. Read your patio heater’s installation instructions carefully to be sure your patio layout is approved for use with your selected heater.

If I have a large patio should I buy multiple heaters?

Yes and no. You may want multiple heaters but that doesn’t mean you need to run all of them simultaneously. Two or more heaters can make sense on large patios that have multiple seating areas or multiple groups using the patio at once.

By positioning multiple heaters around your patio you’ll effectively be able to place them closer to where people are sitting.

However if your patio seating is all gathered around the same table one heater may be sufficient.

Which is more important, heat radius or heater placement?

In many cases heater placement is just as important as heat radius.

Having the largest heat radius advertised doesn’t guarantee your patio heater will keep you warm if it isn’t positioned correctly.

With proper heater placement even a patio heater with a seemingly short heat radius can keep you comfortable when you’re sitting within its most effective heating area.

Heater placement should be your first consideration. Once you know where people will sit, turn to heat radius to help you select the right heater for your space.
